Melissa A. Venable, PhD
While I do have a terminal degree, my career has not been that of the traditional academic. My path includes work in a wide variety of settings ranging from nonprofits to military contractors. I am an instructional designer with experience in industry and higher education (public, private, and for-profit).
My background includes working in student services as a career counselor, academic advisor, and instructor of undergraduate and graduate courses.
I received my doctorate in 2007, in curriculum and instruction – instructional technology, focusing on the online delivery of career decision-making interventions. I also hold graduate degrees in administration and instructional psychology, and am a certified career coach.

Experience and Interests
Currently, I am the Director of Professional Development for the National Career Development Association (NCDA). I am also the Editor of NCDA’s membership magazine, Career Developments.
In my local community, I currently serve as the Board Chair of the Beaufort Digital Corridor Foundation’s Board of Directors, networking with local leaders to develop tech-based resources and work opportunities in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
My previous employers include: the Distance Course Design and Consulting (DCDC) Group at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Kaplan Higher Education (now Purdue Global), KnowledgeTech, Inc., Red Ventures – BestColleges.com, Saint Leo University, the University of South Florida, and Syracuse University.
I am interested in opportunities to work collaboratively on the design and development of learning products and systems. Areas in which I may be able to provide assistance:
- Instructional Design – creating effective online education and training environments, from self-paced tutorials to academic courses
- Content Creation – career development and online education articles, white papers, blog posts, and other formats for online publication
- Consulting – online education projects, survey research, career development
